Bug's Bleat - - GCF: Correction

Volume 9, Issue 41 Friday, October 12, 2007

Hello All,

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.

"Abraham, Martin and John" - written by Dick Holler

“...the good they die young.” Ann Boswell’s memorial service was held this week. She was too young and we all miss her. Alzheimer's stole her mind and her life.

Ann was our nurse for 25 years at Albemarle. She not only treated our injuries but monitored our health and nagged us into making life changes to improve same. She was a tireless champion for employees well being. Personally, she and Nancy Terry (our present nurse) have made a real difference in our life. Their monitoring or my health and help with my medications has made it possible for me to continue working.

Ann was also a big player in our initial efforts to implement long wash times as treatment for chemical exposures. Since we instituted the minimum two hour wash at Magnolia, we haven’t suffered an OSHA recordable chemical exposure. Nancy and Ann fought doctors and corporate bureaucracy to accomplish this.

But Ann was more than a great nurse. She was a super person who reached out to countless others to ease their lives. Several testified to that at her memorial service.

The death of a young person is always difficult to deal with. All those hopes and dreams come to an abrupt end. I don’t ever believe this is God's plan for them. But we have free will and we live in a world where sickness, war, etc. is rampant. My thoughts always turn to the fact that our time here is just a drop in the bucket compared to the eternity ahead of us. So, whether we stay here 80 years or 20 years, is really of no lasting consequence compared to the life ahead of us.

Even so, it's easier to accept the death of an older person.

Dorothy has been doing fairly well. She's going to Springhill each day for therapy at "Inspirations." Evenings seem to be worse as the doctor told us they would be. Wednesday morning she thanked me for taking care of her while she had been sick. Then she said that she was well now and ready to go home.
I explain several times a day that this is home now. But she still packs up all her things at least once a day and tells me she’s ready to go back to her house.

We just found this site [http://www.defenselink.mil/heroes/] Each week the Defense Department highlights military personnel who have gone above and beyond in the war.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Jessica Kuge
Chicago, IL
Bronze Star recipient
In counterinsurgency campaigns, more so than in other types of warfare, success on the battlefield results from quickly incorporating lessons learned into future operations. To do so, however, requires accurate, up close and personal documentation from the heart of the battle. From September 2006 to January 2007, Air Force Staff Sgt. Jessica Kuge served as a Joint Combat Camera Videographer in the Diyala province, constantly risking her safety over several months to record house-to-house raids, weapons searches, convoy patrols, and other combat and humanitarian operations by coalition forces. Her professionalism and bravery during these diverse missions earned her the Bronze Star.

Her days were often spent hauling 60 pounds of gear, an M-16 in one hand, and a camera in the other. And when bullets started flying, she effortlessly switched to a combat role. “I know how important it is to document what’s happening, but there were times I had to drop the camera and I went for the weapon,” she told the Santa Maria Times. On one occasion, after snipers targeted her unit during a house search, she continued documenting an engagement as she faced direct fire. That operation resulted in coalition forces killing four Al Qaeda terrorists and detaining another seven. Another time, Kuge came to the aid of a wounded Iraqi soldier, making sure he received medical aid and was evacuated from the battlefield. Kuge also recorded an ambush on an Iraqi police checkpoint in its entirety, helping ensure that others know what they might expect to face on the battlefield.

In all, Kuge spent more than 700 hours in the field – more than twice the average time for videographers – on 40 combat and humanitarian missions. She obtained more than 30 hours of footage. In addition to aiding future combat operations, the footage recorded by Kuge also helped counter propaganda from enemy forces and inform the local population and media about coalition actions. Her various “population engagements” took her to local hospitals, meetings with Iraqi women, and soccer games with Iraqi youth.

Kuge received the Bronze Star on September 27, 2007. Having already spent eight years in the military, Kuge recently re-enlisted in the Air Force, and is joining the 1st Combat Camera Squadron in Charleston, S.C., the only active duty combat camera squadron in the Air Force.

Here’s a couple from Arkansas:

Arkansas Army National Guard 1st Lt. Michael McCarty
First Lt. McCarty’s platoon was patrolling in the Adhamiyah district of Baghdad on Nov. 20, 2004, when a group of insurgents attacked. As the enemy fighters inflicted a massive assault on the 26-man team, McCarty directed a counterattack. At one point, McCarty charged and destroyed an enemy machine-gun team without any support. In all, his team stopped an enemy three-man machine-gun team and a force of about 75 insurgents. McCarty’s actions prevented the capture of an Iraqi police station. On Feb. 4, 2006, McCarty was awarded the Silver Star Medal. He was previously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.
~
New Blaine, AR
Silver Star recipient
Arkansas Army National Guard Capt. John Vanlandingham
“The Iraqis, to me, were like American soldiers,” Capt. Vanlandingham told Army.mil. “We had the duty to help them as much as we would have a fellow American.” That is the spirit that has driven much of the training of the Iraqi soldiers who will ultimately be responsible for providing security to their nation. In November of 2004, Vanlandingham and his Arkansas Army National Guard unit found themselves fighting alongside – and risking their lives for – the Iraqi National Guardsmen with whom they were patrolling.

As Vanlandingham’s ten vehicle patrol of American and Iraqi forces traveled on a dirt road through the heart of the violent Sunni Triangle, everyone was on watch: The battle of Fallujah had just begun, and tensions were high. Then the convoy made an unscheduled stop, and the ambush was sprung. Insurgents set off two IEDs, one of which disabled two unarmored humvees carrying dozens of Iraqi Guardsmen. Small-arms fire erupted from all directions, and many of the Iraqis were in the line of fire.

Out front, Vanlandingham had managed to escape the attack, but from his vantage point he saw the Iraqis trapped in ditches taking the brunt of the attack – he knew he had to act. Vanlandingham organized those around him, jumped from his vehicle, and ran through heavy fire to personally evacuate the Iraqis Guardsmen. He braved the kill zone – making multiple trips into the center of the ambush to retrieve one final wounded Iraqi and several sensitive weapons. In all, Capt. Vanlandingham moved more than a dozen dead and wounded Iraqis out of the line of fire, before safely leading the Americans and Iraqis back to their base, where they received life-saving medical treatment.

Three Iraqi Guardsmen were killed during the ambush, but many more would have died absent Capt. Vanlandingham’s actions. On Aug. 12, 2007, he was awarded the Silver Star for his actions.

Friday, I came across two cyclist on US 82 heading east toward El Dorado. I noticed that their bicycle flags had small crosses on to and they had shirts saying “Wheel Power” so I “googled” them and found that WHEEL POWER Christian Cyclists is the National Organization of Christian Cyclists, a bicycling ministry in the United States of America. This week, we read “When Heaven and Earth Changed Places” by Le Ly Hayslip
Now, we’re reading “Homegrown Democrat: A Few Plain Thoughts from the Heart of America” By Garrison Keillor
~~~~~
By the way, one of the things Mr. Keillor advocates is universal health care. How could anyone be against that? We’ll I’m “again” it. Sort of. I’m not against everyone having access to competent, qualified, health care. I am against it being a government program for everyone.
My experience with insurance, both federal and private has been fraught with frustration. But the federal parts are worse. Can you say “Walter Reed Hospital?”
Anytime you let the bureaucracy run a program, you lose common sense and concern for the well being of the individual. See the discussion of Canadian health care below.
My suggestion is to make health insurance costs 100% tax deductible. Both for the employer and employee. That way, it wouldn’t cost the employer anything to provide insurance (if he’s got a profitable business) and the employee won’t be penalized for having the insurance.
This would encourage everyone to have insurance but still let them pick their own plan.
O.K. to make the Democrats out there happy, you can add a surcharge type tax on the companies that don’t provide health insurance.
~~~~~
I saw on the news up here in Canada where Hillary Clinton introduced her new health care plan. Something similar to what we have in Canada. I also heard that Michael Moore was raving about the health care up here in Canada in his latest movie. As your friend and someone who lives with the Canada health care plan I thought I would give you some facts about this great medical plan that we have in Canada.

First of all:

1) The health care plan in Canada is not free. We pay a premium every month of $96. for Shirley and I to be covered. Sounds great eh. What they don't tell you is how much we pay in taxes to keep the health care system afloat. I am personally in the 55% tax bracket. Yes 55% of my earnings go to taxes. A large portion of that and I am not sure of the exact amount goes directly to health care our #1 expense.
2) I would not classify what we have as health care plan, it is more like a health diagnosis system. You can get into to see a doctor quick enough so he can tell you "yes indeed you are sick or you need an operation" but now the challenge becomes getting treated or operated on. We have waiting lists out the ying yang some as much as 2 years down the road.
3) Rather than fix what is wrong with you the usual tactic in Canada is to prescribe drugs. Have a pain here is a drug to take- not what is causing the pain and why. No time for checking you out because it is more important to move as many patients thru as possible each hour for Government re-imbursement
4) Many Canadians do not have a family Doctor.
5) Don't require emergency treatment as you may wait for hours in the emergency room waiting for treatment.
6) Shirley's dad cut his hand on a power saw a few weeks back and it required that his hand be put in a splint - to our surprise we had to pay $125. for a splint because it is not covered under health care plus we have to pay $60. for each visit for him to check it out each week.
7) Shirley's cousin was diagnosed with a heart blockage. Put on a waiting list . Died before he could get treatment.
8) Government allots so many operations per year. When that is done no more operations, unless you go to your local newspaper and plead your case and embarrass the government then money suddenly appears.
9)The Government takes great pride in telling us how much more they are increasing the funding for health care but waiting lists never get shorter. Government just keeps throwing money at the problem but it never goes away. But they are good at finding new ways to tax us, but they don't call it a tax anymore it is now a user fee.
10) A friend needs an operation for a blockage in her leg but because she is a smoker they will not do it. Despite paying into the health care system all these years. My friend is 65 years old. Now there is talk that maybe we should not treat fat and obese people either because they are a drain on the health care system. Let me see now, what we want in Canada is a health care system for healthy people only. That should reduce our health care costs.
11) Forget getting a second opinion, what you see is what you get.
12) I can spend what money I have left after taxes on booze, cigarettes, junk food and anything else that could kill me but I am not allowed by law to spend my money on getting an operation I need because that would be jumping the queue. I must wait my turn except if I am a hockey player or athlete then I can get looked at right away. Go figger. Where else in the world can you spend money to kill yourself but not allowed to spend money to get healthy.
13) Oh did I mention that immigrants are covered automatically at tax payer expense having never contributed a dollar to the system and pay no premiums.
14) Oh yeah we now give free needles to drug users to try and keep them healthy. Wouldn't want a sickly druggie breaking into your house and stealing your things. But people with diabetes who pay into the health care system have to pay for their needles because it is not covered but the health care system.

I send this out not looking for sympathy but as the election looms in the states you will be hearing more and more about universal health care down there and the advocates will be pointing to Canada. I just want to make sure that you hear the truth about health care up here and have some food for thought and informed questions to ask when broached with this subject.
Step wisely and don't make the same mistakes we have.
Thanks to Dan McIntyre

Flu Season is coming soon!!
Flu Facts from HEALTHSMART by Dr. Tedd Mitchell

1. Each year 30,000-35,000 Americans die from flu and its complications.
2. Influenza is a virus and anyone can get it.
3. Children under 5, adults over 50 and people with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease and chronic bronchitis are at high risk of complications.
4. Being immunized by a flu shot significantly reduces the risk of getting the flu.
5. Most folks who get the flu vaccine have no reaction. Up to 25% may have some redness and swelling at the site. A small percentage may experience a slight fever, chills and headache within 24 hours. These symptoms end within a few days. ( This is not the flu.)
6. You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. The vaccine is not made from a live virus.
7. The flu virus mutates from year to year, so a vaccination from last season is not effective for this year's strains.
The Albemarle medical department will begin giving employees flu shots at the Health Fair on November 8. You don't need to call to get one, just show up at the fair. After that you can get a shot Mon-Thur from 10-3 at the clinic. Local flu season usually begins in late December and usually peaks in February and March. It takes about 14 days to have immunity after you have been vaccinated.

New Study from Barna Reveals What Teens Look for in a Church

"...to worship or make a connection with God" was described as "very important."
Aimee Herd (October 9, 2007)

(U.S.)—The Barna Corporation has done some new research regarding teens, and what they are hoping to find in a church, and what their spiritual habits are.
As far as what young people are expecting from their church experience, the most common response (45%) was "to worship or make a connection with God"—this was described as "very important."
According to the survey, three-quarters of the teens (72%) said they pray during the week—the most common spiritual activity among the respondents. Half of the teens surveyed (48%) stated that they attend a church worship service.
The results are actually lower, however, than those of previous years, when 10-years-ago, 81% of teens stated they prayed during the week, and 53% said they attended worship services.
To see all the results of the Barna survey, follow the link.

Greetings,

A new dispatch is published: Under Distant Stars [http://www.michaelyon-online.com/wp/under-distant-stars.htm].

I've just spent 10 days on the Iran-Iraq border with an excellent British "Battle Group" called 4 Rifles. We truly were living under the desert stars.

I am currently in Basra. There are reports that Basra is in chaos.

These reports are false. Basra is mostly peaceful; the British have not lost a soldier in combat for more than a month, and Iraqi-on-Iraqi violence has plummeted in the last six weeks or so.

The British have NOT pulled out of Iraq or Basra yet, but from what I can see, their force reduction decisions are militarily and politically sound, and are supported by top American commanders in Baghdad.

The news reports I am seeing about Basra are incomplete at best, and largely inaccurate.

(Reminds me of Mosul during 2005.)

V/r,
Michael Yon

Here's an excerpt from "Under Distant Stars".

It’s been many months since the soldier was killed with the IED, and the subsequent call asking who would get the money for his death, and then his organs were harvested. I think about him often, even though we never met until his brain was dead and his body was only barely alive. The impact of his life and death might seem like a tiny, twinkling star in the heavens: so dim, most people would never see it; or if they did, it might not seem so memorable arrayed against so many other faint specks of glowing dust. Like the dimmest stars to our straining eyes, his life might seem distant and his death irrelevant to people searching for meaning in the loss of yet another soldier.

That obligatory Army-issue newspaper announcement might be the only formal recognition he will ever get for dying in service to his country. But it won’t be the greatest one, not by far. And not for those who saw the young nurse crying for him, or the stoic wash of tears that stained the battle-weary faces of his buddies, gathered in combat gear to see him off.

BreakPoint
With Chuck Colson

The Atheist Leap of Faith
10/12/2007

Atheists, God, and Reason

In a recent issue of Scientific American, arch-Darwinist Richard Dawkins and physicist Lawrence Krauss discussed the relationship between science and religion.

Dawkins, whose latest book, The God Delusion, is only one of a slew of recent books attacking religious beliefs, prefers an “in your face” approach. He once wrote that “if you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid, or insane.” He then added “or wicked, but I’d rather not consider that.”

In his discussion with Krauss, Dawkins stood by his statement, calling it “a simple and sober statement of fact.”

For his part, Krauss prefers to “reach out” to people and “understand where they are coming from”—not so that he might learn from them: Like Dawkins, he assumes that the people in question have little, if anything, to teach him. Rather, his goal is to “seduce” them into “understanding” and accepting scientific truths.

Thus Krauss says that “telling people . . . that their deepest beliefs are simply silly—even if they are” is counterproductive.

As you may have inferred from the “even if they are,” Krauss does not deny that religious belief is “irrational.” He simply thinks that religion is too deeply ingrained to be done away with. Better to help people “moderate” their beliefs and “cut out the most irrational and harmful aspects of religious fundamentalism.”

All of this begs the question: “Is faith, in particular, Christianity, irrational?”

Neither Dawkins nor Krauss comes close to proving this. Instead, Dawkins and Krauss simply assume that materialism—the idea that there is nothing besides matter—is true. Thus, what makes a faith “rational” is whether it can be proven empirically.

Dawkins and Krauss do not offer any arguments to justify their assumptions. They do not tell us why materialism is true: Instead, they ask you to take its truth as a given—in other words, on faith.

Speaking of faith, what Dawkins means by the word faith is, to put it politely, idiosyncratic. His technique, on display in the Scientific American piece, is to find the most extreme, fringe Christian positions and ascribe them to all Christians. He then cites these beliefs as proof that all Christian faith is irrational.

Reading their discussion or anything else associated with Dawkins and what is being called the “New Atheism,” you would not know that many of the greatest scientific discoveries were made by people of faith—not scientists who happened to be Christians, but people whose faith inspired and informed their scientific endeavors.

The work of physicists like Krauss would not be possible without Michael Faraday’s work in electromagnetism. Faraday was a devout Christian who believed nature to be intelligible because it was created and upheld by a God who made Himself known in both His Word and in nature.

Rodney Stark, the eminent sociologist, writes that Christianity rescued reason. Christians saw reason as a gift of a rational God, and it could, therefore, be used to explore the universe and world that God had made. This belief made modern science possible.

If you meet someone who says your Christian faith is irrational, ask him to explain the basis of his faith.

This is part five in a five-part series.

Frustrated at always being corrected by my spouse, I decided the next time it happened I would have a comeback. That moment finally arrived, and I was ready.

A lady who was speeding had an officer pull her to the side of the road. She didn't have her seat belt on so as soon as she stopped, she quickly slipped it on before the officer got to her window.

After talking to her about speeding, the officer said, "I see you are wearing your seat belt. Do you believe in wearing it at all times?"

"Yes, I do, officer," she replied.

"Well," asked the officer, "do you always do it up with it looped through your steering wheel?"

Bizarre Driving Laws

The Greek sage Aristotle once penned, "Even when the laws have been written down, they ought not always remain unchanged." Not only is this wise advice, but also prophetic. Especially when you focus on some of the driving laws that loiter on the pages of state statutes.

Tennessee, for example, has a law that bans shooting game, other than whales, from moving vehicles. Apparently, this law was authored during an unusually high tide or after too many dizzying spins on a Tilt-a-Whirl at Dollyworld. Chances of any whale finding its way into Tennessee via the Cumberland River are about as likely as Tony Danza winning a lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival. Yet, it exists.

So as to assure that your next cross-country vacation does not get pricked by the thorns of legality, we at DMV.ORG have organized a list of arcane state laws that you should be aware of. For nothing can be more embarrassing than having to phone your attorney from Kentucky for help in escaping a fine for trying to transport an ice cream cone in your back pocket.

Alabama
* It is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle.

* It is legal to drive the wrong way down a one-way street as long as a lantern is attached to the front of your car.

* Driving barefoot is illegal.

Alaska
* It is illegal to tie a dog to the roof of your car.

Arkansas
* It is illegal for a person to blare the horn on a vehicle at any place where cold drinks or sandwiches are served after 9 p.m.

California
* Any woman dressed in a housecoat is prohibited from driving a car.

* It is illegal in San Francisco to buff or dry your car with used underwear.

* No unoccupied vehicle may exceed 60 miles per hour.

Florida
* If an elephant is tied to a parking meter, the owner or attendant must deposit money in the meter.

Georgia
* State Assembly members are immune from being ticketed for speeding while the State Assembly is in session.

* In Marietta, Georgia, it is illegal to spit from a moving car or bus, but is okay from a moving truck.

Illinois
* In Evanston, Illinois, it is unlawful to change clothes while inside a car with the curtains drawn, except during a fire.

Kansas
* In Derby, Kansas, it is considered a misdemeanor to screech your tires while driving.

Kentucky
* If you stop for ice cream while driving, be aware that it is considered unlawful to transport an ice cream cone in your back pocket.

Massachusetts
* You will be ticketed if you drive with a gorilla in the backseat of your car.

Michigan
* If you car breaks down in Detroit and you are waiting for assistance, be aware that sitting in the middle of the street to read a newspaper is illegal.

Minnesota
* It is illegal to cross state lines, regardless if you are walking or driving, with a duck on your head. And, if you're crossing into Wisconsin, the law also applies to chickens.

* In Minnetonka, Minnesota, if you drive a truck that leaves mud, dirt, or sticky substances on any road, you will be considered a public nuisance who is harming the peace, safety, and general welfare of the town.

* You cannot ride a motorcycle without a shirt.

Montana
* In Whitehall, Montana, vehicles are prohibited from driving with ice picks attached to the wheels.

Nevada
* It is illegal to drive a camel on the highway.

New Jersey
* Drivers are required to beep their car horns before passing another vehicle.

* If convicted of driving while intoxicated, you permanently lose the option of registering for a vanity license plate.

North Carolina
* In Dunn, North Carolina, it is illegal to drive on a sidewalk.

Ohio
* In Oxford, Ohio, authorities will ticket you if you consecutively drive around the town square more than 100 times.

* Keep in mind that if your car breaks down and you phone for a cab, you will be ticketed if you opt to ride on the cab's roof.

Oklahoma
* It is considered illegal to read a comic book while driving.

Oregon
* You will be ticketed if you leave your car door open longer than is deemed necessary.

* You will be slapped with a Class A traffic violation if you use your car on an Oregon highway to prove your physical endurance.

* It is illegal to pump your own gas.

Pennsylvania
* If you spy a team of approaching horses, you are required by law to pull to the side of the road and cover your car with a blanket or dust cover that has been painted or sewn to blend into the scenery. But, if the horses react skittish to your efforts, you are then required to disassemble your car and hide the parts in the nearby underbrush.

South Carolina
* In Hilton Head, South Carolina, you cannot leave trash in your vehicle out of fear of attracting rats.

Tennessee
* It is illegal to fire a gun at any wild game other than whales from a moving car.

West Virginia
* It is perfectly legal, for road maintenance purposes, to scavenge road kill.

0-200 IN 6 SEC

Ed was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really mad. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds, AND IT BETTER BE THERE."

The next morning, Ed got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window, and sure enough, there was a medium-sized gift-wrapped box in the middle of the driveway.

Confused, the wife put on her robe, ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back into the house. She opened it and found a brand-new bathroom scale.

Funeral services for Ed have been scheduled for Friday.

Cops and Robbers

Sally had three very active boys. One summer evening, she was playing cops and robbers in the back yard after dinner. One of the boys "shot" his mother and yelled, "Bang! You're dead." She slumped to the ground, and when she didn't get up right away, a neighbor ran over to see if she had been hurt in the fall.

When the neighbor bent over, the overworked mother opened one eye and said, "Shhh. Don't give me away. It's the only chance I've had to rest all day."

Bad Day

A little guy is sitting at the bar just staring at his drink for half an hour when this big trouble-making biker steps next to him, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig. The poor little guy starts crying.

"Come on man. I was just giving you a hard time," the biker says. "I can't stand to see a man crying."

"This is the worst day of my life," says the little guy between sobs. "I can't do anything right. I overslept and was late to an important meeting, so my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car was stolen and I don't have any insurance. I grabbed a cab home but, after the cab left, I discovered my wallet was still in the cab. At home I found my wife in bed with the gardener and my dog bit me. So I came to this bar trying to work up the courage to put an end to my life, and then you show up and drink the poison!"

Retired Mind

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse.
I can't afford one.
So, I'm wearing my garage door opener. I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call blue teeth, I think
You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.
I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!
I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is 'when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.'
I thought about making a fitness movie, for folks my age, and call it 'Pumping Rust.'
I have gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!
I know, when people see a cat's litter box, they always say, 'Oh, have you got a cat?'
Just once I want to say, 'No, it's for company!'
Employment application blanks always ask who is to be notified in case of an emergency.'
I think you should write, 'A Good Doctor!'
Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office?
What are we supposed to do... write to these men?
Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail?
Or better yet, arrest them while they are taking their pictures!
I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older Then, it dawned on me, they were cramming for their finals.

As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.

Not Tickled Pink About Girlish Pink Guns
I wish I were making this up but, alas, I’m not — pink guns for girls.

Firearms shops in the US are stocking pink rifles and shotguns to encourage girls to get into shooting. …
They include a Remington 20-gauge shotgun with a pink and black stock emblazoned with the slogan: “Shoot like a girl if you can!” …
“Females want to shoot guns, but they want them to look pretty, too,” he said. “Guys could give a rat’s butt what their gun looks like.”
I think it’s time to take aim at those guns with a limerick:

Not Tickled Pink About Girlish Pink Guns
By Madeleine Begun Kane

Would you like your young daughter to shoot?
Simply buy her a shotgun that’s cute.
But be sure that it’s pink.
It’s so pretty, she’ll think.
Breeding killers—a stylish pursuit.

A Holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like." The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.
The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.
But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
The Lord said, "You have seen Hell."
They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, "I don't understand."
It is simple," said the Lord. "It requires but one skill. You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."
Remember that I will always share my spoon with you.

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/

Commentary:
For several years, a regular visitor to inboxes around the world is an email that asks people to visit The Breast Cancer site and click on a button to help pay for Mammogram for underprivileged women. Although the email has some of the characteristics of a hoax, the information it contains is true.
The Breast Cancer Site is real and money paid by site advertisers does indeed go towards providing free mammogram. When a visitor clicks on the "Fund Free Mammogram" button on the site, another page opens that contains banner advertisements from site sponsors. All of the fees paid by these sponsors are used to fund free mammogram.
The Breast Cancer Site is not in itself a non-profit organization. Some of the revenue derived from products sold in The Breast Cancer Site store generates profit for the site. However, 100% of funds generated via clicks on the "Fund Free Mammogram" button and a portion of the purchase price for products sold in the site store are used by the non-profit National Breast Cancer Foundation to provide free mammogram to minority, and low-income women in the United States.

According to information on the site, more than 2,600 mammogram were funded by visitor clicks during 2006, while funds derived from site store purchases funded a further 2,955.

One small anomaly in the message should be noted. I have seen no indication that the site is "having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day". The "Daily Results" page on the site indicates that the site is actually funding a lot more than one mammogram a day, even on slow days.

In any case, this is a worthy cause and I would encourage readers to regularly visit the site and click on the "Fund Free Mammogram" button.

A man from Norfolk , VA called a local radio station to share this on Sept
11th, 2003. His Name was Robert Matthews. These are his words:
"A few weeks before Sept. 11th, my wife and I found out we were going to have our first child. She planned a trip out to California to visit her sister. On our way to the airport, we prayed that God would grant my wife a safe trip and be with her.
Shortly after I said 'amen,' we both heard a loud pop and the car shook violently. We had blown out a tire. I replaced the tire as quickly as I could, but we still missed her flight. Both very upset, we drove home.
I received a call from my father who was retired NYFD. He asked what my wife's flight number was, but I explained that we missed the flight. My father informed me that her flight was the one that crashed into the southern tower. I was too shocked to speak. My father also had more news for me; he was going to help. 'This is not something I can't just sit by for; I have to do something.'
I was concerned for his safety, of course, but more because he had never given his life to Christ. After a brief debate, I knew his mind was made up. Before he got off of the phone, he said, 'take good care of my grandchild.' Those were the last words I ever heard my father say; he died while helping in the rescue effort.
My joy that my prayer of safety for my wife had been ; answered quickly became anger. I was angry at God, at my father, and at myself. I had gone for nearly two years blaming God for taking my father away. My son would never know his grandfather, my father had never accepted Christ, and I never got to say goodbye.
Then something happened. About two months ago, I was sitting at home with my wife and my son, when there was a knock on the door. I looked at my wife, but I could tell she wasn't expecting anyone. I opened the door to a couple with a small child. The man looked at me and asked if my father's name was Jake Matthews. I told him it was. He quickly grabbed my hand and said, 'I never got the chance to meet your father, but it is an honor to meet his son.'
He explained to me that his wife had worked in the World Trade Center and had been caught inside after the attack. She was pregnant and had been caught under debris. He then explained that my father had been the one to find his wife and free her.
My eyes welled up with tears as I thought of my father giving his life for people like this. He then said, 'There is something else you need to know.'
His wife went on to tell me that as my father worked to free her, she talked to him and led him to Christ.
I began sobbing at the news. Now I know that when I get to heaven, my father will be standing beside Jesus to welcome me, and that this family would be able to thank him themselves.
This was sent to me from a good friend...
When their baby boy was born, they named him Jacob Matthew in honor of the man who gave his life so that mother and baby could live."
This story should help us to realize two things: First - God is always in control. We may not see the reason behind things, and we may never know this side of heaven, but God is ALWAYS in control. And second - that though it has been several years since the attacks, we should never let it become a mere tragic memory.

God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

Is Salt the Next Trans Fat?
By Peter Jaret, EatingWell.com

In the past four years the number of reduced-salt alternatives on grocery shelves, from V8 juice to Goldfish crackers, has more than doubled. Indeed, "low-sodium" seems poised to follow "trans-fat-free" as the next rallying cry in the campaign for healthier diets, especially as new evidence underscores the benefits of easing up on salt.
The most startling numbers come from a study published in the April 2007 British Medical Journal, which found that reducing sodium slashed cardiovascular-disease risk by 25 to 30 percent—far more than even many advocates of low-sodium diets imagined. "We’ve known for a long time that excessive sodium raises blood pressure," says Nancy Cook, Sc.D., an associate professor of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who led the study. Two previous investigations, reported in 1992 and 1997, had shown that when some of the participants were counseled to reduce sodium, average blood pressure levels fell. Cook and her team decided to check back to see if the volunteers in the low-sodium group—1,169 people in all—were any healthier 10 to 15 years later. They were. Surveys showed that people who’d been counseled to cut back on salty foods were still following that advice. And they were as much as one-third less likely to have suffered a heart attack, stroke or other complications of cardiovascular disease.
"The numbers really surprised us," says Cook, who acknowledges that while cutting back on salt has been shown to lower blood pressure, the reduction is usually fairly modest—a few points, on average, in those with borderline hypertension. The reduction in the study participants’ heart-disease risk, by contrast, was dramatic. One reason may be that elevated blood pressure is only one way excessive sodium is bad for the body. Recent studies show it can also stiffen artery walls and may even damage heart muscle. Too much sodium may also be a factor in fueling the epidemic of insulin resistance, a risk factor for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How much sodium is too much? Federal experts recommend a maximum of 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day—the amount in a teaspoon of table salt. Some studies show that cutting back even further (to a Spartan 1,500 mg daily) offers additional protection against hypertension.
Unfortunately, most Americans still consume about 3,375 mg of sodium a day. The growing ranks of low-sodium processed foods should help bring those numbers down, since processed foods account for a whopping 80 percent of sodium in Americans’ diets.

Bottom Line: Watching your sodium intake now can provide big health payoffs later. Reduced-sodium processed foods can help, but you’ll get even more benefit by choosing whole, unprocessed foods, cooking more from "scratch" and using just a dash of salt as needed. By gradually reducing the amount you use, you can reset your taste buds so that less salt doesn’t mean bland. "Many of the people in our study reported that they had grown to prefer low-sodium alternatives," says Cook.

Since school has started, the traffic on the highways has increased tremendously! Be aware of your surroundings! Be careful for yourself and your family and also watch out for the person next to you. Be safe!

Clear Cell Phone Memory Before Repair

Before you send your cell phone away for repairs, erase everything from the memory. Cell phones may contain sensitive data, such as account and credit card numbers, PINs, calendars, and so on. When you send in your phone to be repaired, you may receive a refurbished phone in return--and someone else will get yours. Don't just hit "delete"-- each phone has a different way to erase information.
Visit wirelessrecycling.com, enter your phone's make and model and learn how to successfully erase your information.

Stay Healthy -- Stay Safe
Today's Message is from Mo Munoz (a Pasadena Albemarle employee).
...............................
I believe that staying healthy is a requirement for staying safe at work or elsewhere. My son just turned 40 last May and right now he is at home recuperating from a quadruple heart bypass. Was he out of shape? No, half of their garage has workout equipment and both he and my daughter-in-law also work out at a boot camp type gym. His cardiologist informed him that this medical problem was hereditary. So what can we do to stay healthy besides watching what we eat and exercise?
My doctor suggested we all research our family history for serious medical problems.
Have regular physicals and find out where our bodies are in relation to those medical problems if any.
There is also Genetic Screening which helps in detecting possible serious illnesses or diseases.
Early detection of any serious medical problems increases the chances of controlling them or wiping them out.
Don't wait until your doctor informs you of a serious medical problem that requires immediate drastic action to "try" to correct.

Stay healthy, stay safe, and enjoy life in a state of well being.

TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPICS: Terabytes / Pets / Top Twenty

In today's TOURBUS, you'll learn what a Terabyte is, and how many pickup trucks you need to carry one. I've also got a rundown on the best sites for pet lovers. And because the Immutable Law of Supply and Demand requires it, a brand new Top Twenty. Read on!

-------------------------------------
Is There a Terabyte in Your Future?
------------------------------------

Have you been seeing advertising for terabytes lately, and wondering if that's a dinosaur, or if you'll BE a dinosaur without one? Do you remember when you bought your last computer or hard drive? A few gigabytes seemed like scads of storage space. But along came a new operating system, a bunch of MP3 music files, and a bunch of videos.

Now that hard drive is creaking under the load. Enter the Terabyte. Over the last few months, hard drive vendors have been pumping out new products that crack the terabyte barrier. That's 1000 gigabytes, or one TRILLION bytes of storage. How much space is that in practical terms? Do YOU need a terabyte? Read on for my take on terabytes...

Pets in Spaaaaaace! (Cyberspace, that is...)

Sorry, I couldn't resist an obscure reference to the Muppet Show in that headline. But I'm inviting those who love cats, dogs and other critters (furry, feathered or scaly) to check out my favorite websites for and about pets. They cover pet health, training tips, travelling with Fido & Fluffy, how to connect with other pet owners, and other cool pet sites you won't want to miss...

The Top Twenty
----------------

Casey Kasem has the Top 40 locked up, so I've decided to stick to with the Top Twenty. Every few months I go through the Ask Bob logs and see which articles were the most popular. And well, it's been a few months. So here are some selections from the current Top Twenty, ranked by readership volume.

Check 'em out, post your own pithy comments, and use the handy "Send this article to a friend" link in each article so your friends will be almost as smart as you!

Nine Missing WWII Airmen are Identified

The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of nine U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
They are 1st Lt. David P. McMurray, of Melrose, Mass.; 1st Lt. Raymond Pascual, of Houston, Texas; 2nd Lt. Millard C. Wells Jr., of Paris, Ky.; Tech. Sgt. Leonard J. Ray, of Upper Falls, Md.; Tech. Sgt. Hyman L. Stiglitz, of Boston, Mass.; Staff Sgt. Robert L. Cotey, of Vergennes, Vt.; Staff Sgt. Francis E. Larrivee, of Laconia, N.H.; Staff Sgt. Robert J. Flood, of Neelyton, Pa.; and Staff Sgt. Walter O. Schlosser, of Lake City, Mich.; all U.S. Army Air Forces. Ray and Flood were buried last week in Harford County, Md., and Dry Run, Pa., respectively. The burials of the other servicemen will be at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. on a date to be determined.
Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army.
On July 7, 1944, the men were aboard a B-24J Liberator that departed North Pickenham, England, on a mission to bomb a German aircraft factory near Bernburg, Germany. The plane was last seen by U.S. aircrew members in that vicinity. Captured records revealed that it had crashed near Westeregeln, about 20 miles northwest of the target in what would become the Soviet sector of a post-war-divided Germany.
In 2001, a group of German citizens interested in recovering wartime relics and remains learned of a potential crash site south of Westeregeln. Later that year and in 2002, the group found the site and uncovered human remains from what appeared to be two burial locations. The remains and other personal effects, including identification tags, were turned over to U.S. officials.
In 2003, a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) team excavated the crash site and recovered additional remains, identification tags and non-biological material evidence.
Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of the remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department’s mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/ or call (703) 699-1169.
